Positive Safeguarding Practice
National Safeguarding Week – Summary
Positive safeguarding practice was the theme of a wide-ranging programme of events that took place across Mid and West Wales for National Safeguarding Week, commencing on 10th November 2025. The programme was coordinated by CWMPAS and CYSUR, the Regional Safeguarding Board, and this year’s theme was designed in response to safeguarding issues that had emerged across the region during the previous year.
We had several hundred participants registering and engaging in the online events throughout the week, in addition to numerous local events that took place on the Tuesday the 11th November 2025 , with very positive feedback received.
During the week, we hosted a variety of events and webinars that aimed to raise awareness and highlight issues affecting children and adults at risk. This included a webinar revisiting key elements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and how these should be applied in safeguarding practice in a variety of situations, contexts and scenarios. In addition, we hosted a webinar sharing the findings from the 2025 thematic review of adult practice reviews in Wales, and another highlighting a free service for safeguarding vulnerable people with dementia who are at heightened risk of going missing (the Herbert Protocol). Alongside these events, there was input from third sector and independent groups, including sessions from New Pathways, Lucy Faithfull Foundation Wales, NSPCC Cymru, and Llanelli Mind.
A highlight of the week was a conference for multi-agency practitioners, held at Yr Egin, Carmarthen. This included presentations and workshops from keynote speakers and featured a presentation on the outcome and findings of the review undertaken on the events that took place in Southport in July 2024, information on the Most Significant Change model of practice, vulnerability in neurodiversity, and using AI to support information sharing, alongside input from service users and those with lived experience.
